Discussing the Tough Topics

Many times throughout my life, I have found myself in Christian pockets that struggle to know how to address topics in life that we consider difficult. Many of us avoid these topics because we do not know how to discuss them. A few will deny some problems truly exist. Some of us avoid certain topics because they are too sensitive and touch the deep recesses of our souls.

One thing I have learned in life. Leave it to our students to find a way to discuss the things that we as adults often find difficult. When given the venue, our students will find the means to share what we all really need to hear.

I always love to share what my students (and in this case a former student) are doing. This young man spent middle school in my science classroom just three years ago. As a high school student now and a active member of my church’s youth program, this young man still makes his way into my line of sight often. As in middle school, he is still challenging himself and using his talents to help those around him.

His most recent work has earned him a spot in a state wide competition, but more importantly this work brings to the forefront one of those topics that we often find difficult.

My encouragement to you today:

  • Never take for granted the story your students can tell.
  • Never take for granted the difference your students can make.
  • Never take for granted the part you play in their story.
  • Never miss the opportunity to tell your students (past or present) when you are proud of them.

The work of this young man brought tears to my eyes and some small part of me enjoyed his moment of success with him. Do not miss those moments to encourage, to challenge, or to come alongside.
