The Ultimate Uber

Uber has changed our transportation culture worldwide. This quick rise business started out carrying its first passenger on July 5, 2010 and now functions in more than 65 countries. The company also shows a promising future with the addition of the Uber Freight option and a possible wheel in the self driving car industry.

My financial literacy class recently completed the challenge “Can You Make It As An Uber Driver?” through NGPF (Next Gen Personal Finance). This amazing activity focuses on the many decisions made daily in the life of an Uber driver. My students really enjoyed making these decisions and then waiting to see the outcome of their business choices.

This activity did get me thinking. Where did the name “Uber” come from? What does the word mean? I found that the word Uber has a German origin and describes superior service. Also listed as meaning “the best, top, outstanding”. What an appropriate business name. With some amazing marketing, this name now has worldwide recognition.

As I started to think about it, I decided that not many things in life are truly “uber”. We like to use those descriptions. This is “the best”. We offer “superior” service. That tennis match was “outstanding”. My students might even appreciate the occasional “This is one uber assignment”. But really can something be the best. This phrase is similar to the way we use “love”. I love pizza. I love my dog. I love your hair. I love you with an uber love.

Maybe you think I am being a bit silly with my uber thoughts, but I like to use words appropriately. What in our world truly fits that description?

The one thing that I know that fits is the Creator of the universe.

God.

He is the best. He is outstanding. He is superior. He is the Ultimate Uber.

My challenge for today (for you and/or your students): create a list of the attributes of God that show His uberness. What truth confirms this description of God? The way we think about God determines the way we view God. The way we view God determines how we live for God.
